Who’s pedalling along?
Kim has been coaching teams and organisations for fifteen years, ranging from fast-growing start-ups to established SMEs. Her background includes HR management, organisational coaching and applied creativity, but above all, she has a keen instinct for what a group really needs at any given moment.
As a facilitator, she doesn’t take sides. She is both an ideator and a cycling buddy: someone who shapes the process, raises the difficult questions and pedals along until things start moving forward. Open-minded, with a sense of humour and both feet firmly on the ground.
The name: why Captain & Stoker?
On a tandem, you have two roles. The captain sits at the front, chooses the direction and holds the steer. The stoker sits at the back and provides the power. Who’s more important? Wrong question. Without a captain, you won’t get anywhere; without a stoker, you simply won’t ride at all.
That’s how we look at organisations too: direction and capability, vision and execution, leaders and teams. You can only move forward together. And that is exactly what culture is all about.
The Collective
Captain & Stoker is not a traditional agency, but a nimble collective of independent experts. For each project, we bring in the right specialist, tailored to the phase, the context and the people involved. This means you always get the very best expertise, without any overheads or a consultancy hierarchy.
The team!

Birte Kooken
For fifteen years Birte built HR policies, often from scratch, in fast-changing start-up environments. She then spent seven years as HR Director at OCMW Leuven. Her backpack: a postgraduate in Business Management, a teaching degree and experience in healthcare, government and business, at organisations like Danone, Argenta and Duracell. Since 2016 she has also been an assessor for the European Commission.
As a team coach and facilitator, Birte looks for what makes people stronger together: collaboration, talent development and self-management. She guides teams and leaders through change, coaching leadership and new ways of organising, and likes to draw along the way. Literally: with visual facilitation she makes visible what's going on in a group, so everyone sees the same picture.

Bert Van Roie
Bert started out as a physicist, with five years of scientific research followed by ten years in business, where he grew into the role of Manager Global Product Management & Marketing at a maker of 3D software for dentists. In 2017 he took the leap: since then, with Durven Springen, he guides career coaching programmes and workshops in companies. His backpack: all levels of Inspirerend Coachen with Jef Clement, a specialisation in burnout coaching and the experience of someone who chose a second career himself.
As a coach and facilitator, Bert brings out the best in people and helps them feel at home in their own skin. Cheerful, open and optimistic, with great admiration for people who row against the current a little and dare to choose what they really want. Because that's what drives him: people who take the leap, cold feet and all.
